DC office to be shifted from Madikeri Fort, Land & Funds allocated

Finally the DC office is going to be shifted from the Madikeri Fort. The Govt has granted 2.2  acres of land at Central Workshop near Gandhi Mantap to shift the DC’s office there. The State Govt has also allocated 9 crores for the construction out of which 3.3 crores has already been released for the work.

The Madikeri Fort is a monument of historical importance and the Archeological Survey of India has been requesting the govt since long to hand over the Fort to them for preservation.

Madikeri Fort has seen many a wars.  Madikeri Fort was built by Mudduraja, the first Coorg King in 1681. Tipu Sultan invaded Coorg in 1783 and took over the fort. In 1791 the Kodava army laid siege to the fort and cut off supplies to the fort. The same year Dodda Viraraja(Virarajendra) wrested the fort back from Tipu after the prolonged siege and capitulation by Tipu’s army.
