The 73rd Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan has demanded the State Government to withdraw its order on introducing English from standard first. It is one among 17 resolutions passed at the open session of Sammelan at Dr Rajkumar Vedike in Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.

State Government had shown much enthusiasm to introduce English from first standard while Karnataka has been waiting for judgment on medium of education at the primary level, Sammelan observed.

It should constitute separate committee comprising educational experts, linguists and psychiatrists. It should implement language policy based on its report, Sammelan demanded.

Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Prof Chandrashekhar Patil presided over the session. Resolutions were presented by Parishat secretary Pundaleeka Halambi.

Other resolutions:

Implement recommendations of Kannada Nudi Kannada Gadi Jagruti Jatha Sanchalana Samiti.

Kannada should be used compulsorily in proceedings of Railways Department. State-wide agitation will be launched against Railway Department’s negligence attitude towards Kannada.

Simple and pure Kannada should be used in visual, print media and radio. Kannada digits also should be used compulsorily.

Government should celebrate birth centenaries of renowned Kannada writers with pomp.

Both State and Central Governments should start the process to implement Mahajan Commission’s report which had recommended to include Kasaragodu, Sollapur, Akkalakote and other Kannada-speaking areas into Karnataka.

Mangalore should be merged into North East Railways Division. Separate Railways Division should be constituted for the purpose.

Central Government should show keen interest to include Tulu and Kodava languages in 8th schedule of the Constitution.

State Government should put pressure on Central Government to speed up the works of Railway routes such as Gulbarga-Bidar, Kottur-Harihar and Hassan-Mangalore.

State Government should provide sites and give financial assistance to Kannada Sahitya Parishat district units for the construction of Kannada Sahitya Bhavan.

Central Government should accord classical status to Kannada language immediately.

The simple textbook on financial management should be introduced for primary school students.

Kannada question paper for 100 marks should be introduced compulsorily during recruitment process for the posts in industries in Karnataka.
