Kodava Samaja’s Youth Wing gets into Cultural “policing”

Avatar

This got me a bit worked up……….For the only reason that – i feel it cannot be justified in the name of culture or tradition. And that Kodava Samaja’s name is involved.

If Roshan Somanna has his way he will not allow any inter-caste marriages to happen henceforth.

Ok..before they throw the muck on me saying that I am trying to not defend them because my sister is married to a Kannadiga ( i just ended up saying – she did).,Who cares anyways, we had 2 weddings, 1 Kannadiga way and the other a Kodava wedding and he(my bava) was dressed in the “Kodava attire” totally…from the Kuppya to the peechekathi- to the Odikathi- to the Kodava Jewelery. And both the families were satisfied and both the cultures were respected.

It doesnt end here. Ranju Muthappa says ” The white kuppya can only be worn twice in a lifetime of a Kodava“.  I do not agree with her notion of history and culture here.  First the Kodava youth should know about the Kodagu(Kodava) history, then the culture.

What were our ajjas(alive and kicking ones) wearing the White Kuppya 140 years back for ?? Why do even now in many Kodava functions(apart from the twice prescribed by Ranju) people wear the White Kuppya? Should we hold them also responsible for outraging our culture and tradition ?

Thank god(heavens too) – this ruckus did not happen in my sister’s wedding. If this the way things are  going to be from now onwards, then i would also like to lodge my protest too. And yes, I AM A KODAVA TOO.

Please except me…You can’t????. Then keep the placards aside and let the debate start.

Update: While the DNA Report says the members were of ” Kodava Samaja Youth Wing”.  It seems they also go by the name of  “Nanga Kodava”.

Excellent reaction.I am glad that there are kodavas who understand the predicament in which we had to celebrate the wedding.Only the wearer of the shoe knows where the shoe pinches. If this is the attitude of our community the time is not far when you see kodava dress only in the pictures.Do these culture keepers have the right to block our guests and allow them in only if they speak Kodava language?Kodava talibans indeed.More kodavas should raise their voices against them but the damage done in our marriage cannot be rectified.
