MADIKERI: The Codava National Council has strongly opposed the proposal to establish Greater Talacuavery National Park and 400 high tension power line passing through South Kodagu.
In a representation submitted to the President of India, with copies to the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, the secretary general of CNC, N U Nachappa said that Codava National Council demands a white paper on these two issues.

The letter which was released to the media said that higher government officials, self-proclaimed environmentalists, big business establishments, ruthless land mafia, timber mafia and politicians are involved in the attempt to make Kodagu a national park. He informed that vested interests have presented a diabolical picture regarding human habitats in Kodagu.

He said that various efforts had been made in the past to establish national parks in Kodagu. He said Kodagu should not be a region for such experiments. The CNC also expressed its opposition against the high tension electric line passing through South Kodagu.

He added that multinational companies, avaricious bureaucrats and dishonest politicians will only benefit from the proposed high tension electrical line. He said Codavas who are the majority residents in the area will be the worst sufferers of these developments.

He added that the people of the district are ignorant of the motives behind these developments. Hence he demanded a white paper on these issues so that people will be kept informed.
