According to latest census the population of Coorg is estimated at 5,54,000 souls. At the last count(Census 2001) the population of Kodagu District stood at 5,48,561. The sex ratio in Kodagu is one of the best at 1,091 to 1,000 males the female literacy rate is above 70%.
Looking around, during my visits to Coorg made me feel that the district is increasing in numbers, but the census shows something quite ulta.
Dhanya Matsa of Express feels that the low growth rate is due to ageing population in Kodagu. She maybe right. I notice that most of the youth from Kodagu are migrating to bigger cities for better jobs and livelihood.
